The Lot Valley is one of the most stunning areas of France!  It rivals the Dordogne Valley in natural beauty and yet remains relatively undiscovered.  And, there is no better way to experience this valley and its quaint villages, incredible scenery along Le Lot River, some wonderful regional wines (of course!), prehistoric caves and great cuisine (a given, non?) than by cycling at a leisurely pace!

Our daily routine includes exploring the Lot Valley from the east to the west and the wine region of Cahors.  Our biking days will include routes of approximately 35-40 miles per day and will follow the valley floor, hugging the banks of the river, leaving plenty of time to relax and linger while taking in the dramatic vistas.  All along our eight-day voyage through the Lot, you will be greeted with a hearty and warm welcome.  You’ll come away with a new understanding of life in rural France.

The adventure begins in Cahors, a city well known for its flourishing wine district and the historic Valentré Bridge.  We’ll travel up Le Lot River from Cahors viewing the valley and arrive at the hillside town of Saint-Cirq Lapopie.  There is also the beautiful walking trail along the river to Bouziès via “le chemin de halage”.  We’ll get a personal tour of the historic Château de Cenevières and picnic at the river’s edge.  A highlight of the trip includes touring the Grotte du Pech-Merle, an underground cavern of stalagmites and prehistoric art.  We will bike to the town of Figeac and experience the colorful market in the town square and see the fabled Rosetta Stone that unlocked the mysteries of Egypt.

Our tour finishes in the vibrant green vineyards of Mercuès for several days of cycling, wine tasting and visiting small villages.  We will sample many of this region’s deep-colored and full-bodied red wines and treat our palates to the fine gourmet dishes famous in the Quercy region.  This little known area is a delight to uncover and will provide a unique insight into a side of France that is still truly française.  You will see why the Lot Valley certainly may not remain a secret for long!
